 Fitness Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Recreation Department

JOB SUMMARY: Position responsible for providing assistance as needed in the fitness division.

HOURS: 4pm to 9pm or 5pm to 9pm; flexible days and hours offered; one shift or multiple shifts per week offered up to 28 hours weekly. Some weekends may be required.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Supervises participants in the fitness center to ensure machines are used properly and safely.
  • Ensures cleanliness of the facility and safety of all machines
  • Checking identification of members.
  • Supervises participants using the climbing wall.
  • Monitors gym as needed.
  • Helps set up room for parties.
  • Assists front desk staff and other co-workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of exercise equipment.
  • Ability to provide customer service.
  • Ability to perform CPR.
  • Ability to use computers and various software programs, to include Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The supervisor assigns work with instructions that are detailed, and specific, covering all aspects of the work.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include Municipal, State and Federal laws, OSHA standards and guidelines, Recreation Commission by-laws, departmental and City policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties connected to monitoring the activities of participants in the fitness center. Position can be routine but requires close attention in order to prevent injuries.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to ensure a safe environment for participants in the fitness center. Errors can cause disruption of service, injuries and complaints from participants.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other department personnel and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed indoors.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • One year experience in the fitness field preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills required. 
  • Successful candidate must be able to work flexible hours.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required within 90 days of hire.
