LIFEGUARD

JOB SUMMARY
Position responsible for monitoring the activities at the swimming pool, teach swim classes/lesson, assists swimmers and to take precautions to prevent accidents.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Safeguard's patrons and regulates conduct at the pool;
- Rescue's swimmers in distress and performs first aid as necessary;
- Conducts swimming classes/lessons;
- Provides customer service to members and visitors at the pool;
- Tests the water quality in the pool and maintains records;
- Inspects facility for cleanliness;
- Assists Head Lifeguard as needed; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must be enrolled in high school, high school diploma or equivalent preferred;
- 16 years of age, preferred;
- Lifeguard Certification required; American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification preferred*
- First Aid/CPR Certification, required*
- Must be able to work flexible hours to include nights, weekends, and special events when applicable;
- Previous experience working as a lifeguard, preferred;
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License, preferred.
* Lifeguard and First Aid/CPR can be obtained through the City of Goose Creek Recreation Department.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of water rescue methods.
- Knowledge of life guarding and First Aid.
- Ability to teach swim classes/lessons
- Ability to perform heavy lifting.
- Ability to save swimmers in distress.
- Ability to provide basic first aid.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to provide customer service to include problem solving and dispute resolution when necessary.
- Ability to provide quality, courteous customer service, to include handling difficult customers.
- Ability to handle stress and work under pressure, in a fast-paced environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires lifting people out of the pool and the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed outdoors at the pool with constant exposure to weather and risks involved around water.
